Educating for Change: Education’s Role in Addressing the Climate and Health Crisis

Dr. Mishra conducts research on mental health trauma from climate disasters and how to strengthen community resilience, which she will discuss with us. She also has expertise in accessible digital mental health interventions and precision psychiatry and will discuss the role of such interventions in community research.

Presenter Bios

jyoti-mishraDr. Mishra is an Associate Professor in the department of Psychiatry at the University of California San Diego. She is the founder and director of the NEATLabs and also the co-director of the University of California wide Climate Resilience Initiative (https://www.climateresilience.online/).
Dr. Mishra has research expertise in the study of climate trauma and resilience as well as scalable digital mental health interventions and precision psychiatry. Her research has been widely featured in popular media including features in CNN, TIME magazine, the BBC, NPR, Washington Post, World Economic forum, Scientific American among others, and has also been cited by the National Climate Assessment as first empirical evidence of climate disaster impacts on mental health and well-being.

Arianne Teherani is Professor of Medicine at the University of California, San Francisco School of Medicine. She is Founding Co-Director of the University of California, Center for Climate Health and Equity and Director for Program Evaluation and Education Continuous Quality Improvement for the School of Medicine. Her work identifies and dismantles practices perpetuating educational disparities, informing conversations, research agendas, and policies globally. Dr. Teherani examines interventions aimed at creating equity during medical training and studies exemplars of success. She spearheads research that focuses on education as a core solution to the climate crisis. She examines outcomes of training health professionals on climate-health impacts through community-engaged health professions education, education for healthcare decarbonization, and sustainable practices in health professions training.
