About IAMSE Audio Seminars

A webcast audio seminar is a 1-hour telephone conference call supplemented by
webcast PowerPoint slides, the webinars are a method of exchanging vital
information on timely topics in medical education. The slant of each is geared
toward our membership who have responsibility for teaching the basic sciences to
those in medical training. These basic sciences encompass all subjects that have
arisen from the seven traditional disciplines of:

  • Anatomy
  • Behavioral Science
  • Biochemistry
  • Microbiology and Immunology
  • Pathology
  • Pharmacology
  • Physiology

As with other IAMSE events, all medical professionals are welcome to participate and non-members are admitted on a space-available basis. The fee structure is broken down as follows:

Single Session Full Series
Individual IAMSE Member $25 $120
Institutional IAMSE Members $120 $500
Individual IAMSE Non-Member $40 $240
Institutional IAMSE Non-Member $250 $750

International in scope, these seminars routinely attract participants from three or more countries.

Several topics are being planned and will be explored in groups of five related
1-hour seminars over the course of 5 weeks. Each group thus constitutes a thematic
series, although each presentation is designed to stand independently of the others.

* IAMSE Webcast Audio Seminars are similar to the small group Focus Sessions we
offer at our Annual Association Meetings (but shorter), in that each will address a
single topic. These Seminars are actually 40-45 minute (maximum) formal presentation by an acknowledged expert in that field. The speaker controls his/her
PowerPoint slides that appear either on your computer monitor, or as you have
arranged to project from a computer onto your conference room screen. This is
followed by 15-20-minutes of moderated discussion/Q&A. One (sometimes two)
individuals have been invited to present and lead each session which you “attend”
directly from your office or conference room via teleconference call. The speaker
delivers this presentation directly from his/her own office.

* All Audio Seminars are conducted using the IAMSE Teleconference Bridge. A
registrant may be alone on the phone, be on a speaker phone in his/her office with
one or two others, or dial in directly from a conference room speaker phone with full
projection equipment bringing this presentation to 10, 20, or even more individuals.
Please note – it is essential when using speaker phones that mute buttons be
switched ON. In addition to the registration fee, the long distance phone call to
California (U.S.A.) where our bridge is located will be the responsibility of the
registrant. No software or downloads need to be made, you will simply need a
telephone and internet accessible computer to participate.

* When registering for the web cast audio seminar, you will be prompted to give a
contact name and email. If you are registering as an individual, you may enter your
own name and email or an assistant’s name and email. If you are registering as an
institution, the name provided will be responsible for distributing the information to
the entire faculty. In order to receive the membership discount you must log into
your account. Institutions wishing to receive membership discount, must have one
of the four IAMSE institutional members log in to register. As you may know,
institutional membership grants four membership profiles. However, registering for
the webinar as an institution, grants the entire faculty access to the series. The day
prior to each session, all registered participants will be provided with a designated
phone number and access code. In that e-mail message will be the URL for the
webcast and instructions to set your Internet browser to that address prior to
phoning into the presentation. This site is static, being set to the presenter’s first
slide. During the actual seminar, the presenter will control movement of the slides
on your computer monitor. A second URL is provided which contains all of the
presenter’s slides in .pdf-format, these can be controlled by the participant. A third
URL is sent with a presentation handout to provide opportunity for registrants to
preview all slides, which is highly encouraged.

* All IAMSE Webcast Audio Seminars adhere to a strict schedule as a courtesy to
everyone involved. Each will begin promptly at the hour designated, so we ask that
you “arrive” (phone in) 3 to 5 minutes before the starting time. Please introduce
yourself and your institution upon arrival.
Likewise, Webcast Audio Seminars will end at 60 minutes.

* The importance of this cannot be overstated when multiple individuals are
connected to the same phone conversation. Distracting sounds, second-line ringing
phones, even “breathing” too close to the mouthpiece can all seem amplified. A
separate file has been prepared on IAMSE Webcast Audio Seminar Netiquette, and
you are encouraged to review this prior to the call:

* In addition, each session will be archived. This affords those who registered, but
could not attend the actual seminar the opportunity to take advantage of the
presentation. Each week of the series the day prior to each session call in
information will be sent. In this email is an inactive link, which will later contain the
archive. This link will be made active 2 weeks following the conclusion of the entire

At the end of each IAMSE Webcast Audio Seminar, all participants will be requested
to complete the electronic evaluation form sent after the call via email. These
anonymous forms provide necessary feedback to the presenter(s) and to us, the
organizers. You may also, within this form request a certificate of participation. We
are grateful for your cooperation in this.

We cordially invite you to join us for this interactive means of sharing information
relevant to medical science education and medical science educators. The benefit of
IAMSE Webcast Audio Seminars is that they are presented live, in real time, and are
totally interactive, with experts in the subject presenting and leading the
discussions. Also, because there is no need to leave your office, it is both efficient
and relatively inexpensive.
