Dr. Marie Matte is the
Director of Undergraduate Medical Education
Programs at the Northern Ontario School of
Medicine (NOSM). NOSM is the first new
medical school in Canada in over 30 years.
It was created with a social accountability
mandate to serve the health care needs of
the people of Northern Ontario.
Dr. Matte is a certified health care
professional in the discipline of Medical
Laboratory Science. She has received a
Master of Education degree from Nipissing
University, and a Ph.D. in Higher Education
from Capella University, Minneapolis,
Minnesota. Dr. Matte has over 20 years
experience in higher education as an
academic administrator holding previous
positions including faculty member, Program
Coordinator, Director of Continuing
Education, and Dean of the School of Health
and Emergency Services at the Canadian
community college level. She has extensive
and comprehensive experience in health
science program development, curriculum
development, student assessment, program
evaluation and program implementation.
Internationally, she has been responsible
for the design, development and
operationalization of the Department of
Continuing Education at Nachimutha
Polytechnic in Polachi, Tamil Nadu, India.
For over ten years Dr. Matte has served as
an accreditation survey team member as well
as an accreditation survey team chair for
the Canadian Medical Association (CMA).
Dr. Matte has presented to both national and
international medical educators on the
social accountability mandate of the
Northern Ontario School of Medicine. These
presentations include hands-on workshops,
oral presentations, and panel discussions.
Additionally, Dr. Matte is a member of an
international medical education consortium
(Training for Health Education Network)
involved in the design and evaluation of
socially accountable medical schools.
