Leadership in a Changing Environment: Inspiring a Shared Vision Presenter: AH Lintner, MA Healthcare providers and other leaders in higher education must demonstrate exceptional leadership skills if they are to create an environment that facilitates essential change and upholds teamwork. Effective change leaders are able to conceive of, develop and implement strategies to ensure long-term institutionalization of innovative change. They share common skills including developing compelling visions, communicating key cultural values, inspiring others’ involvement, and holding people accountable throughout the change process. They also build strategic coalitions and partnerships, provide necessary resources, monitor and provide continuous improvement, and promote collective decision-making. Of all the common characteristics of successful leaders, the most cited is that of vision. Visioning is not forecasting the future; it is creating the future through discovery and action. An institutional vision is elemental in providing a focus for team activity and for sustaining the long-term motivation and unity that teams need to achieve results. A vision must be exciting, well communicated and supported by leadership. To inspire this shared vision, a leader must possess the essential skills discussed earlier. In addition, the leader must be able to influence different employees and situations by utilizing the appropriate leadership style. In this session, we will explore how to create a compelling vision and ways to see the vision through to fruition by engaging the talents of a diverse workforce. Engaging talent is best accomplished by approaching people based on their needs and the surrounding circumstances. Which approach will be most beneficial – democratic, authoritative, affiliative or something else? Learn how to carry out your vision for change by helping people to perform professionally and optimally. You will be amazed at the immediate results of just a few changes in your own leadership behaviors.
