Webcast Audio Seminar Series

Learner-Centered Strategies for the Lecture Hall

The delivery of higher education is going through a paradigm shift whereby the straightforward transmission of information in the form of a lecture is being reconsidered in favor of learner-centered approaches. In the spring 2005 Webcast Audio Seminar series we looked at the theory behind learner centered education. Now, in this fall 2006 series we combine this theoretical approach, to learner centered education, with the lecture (as a form of educational delivery) in examining “Learner Centered Strategies for the Lecture Hall”.

The series starts off with us ‘finding out how well they are learning what we are teaching’ with Dr. Tom Angelo, an expert on classroom assessment, speaking to us from New Zealand. This is followed with Dr. Ron Harden, a pioneering educator in the Medical Sciences who has built an International medical program offered entirely online, speaking about ‘learning styles and teaching approaches in the physical and virtual lecture hall’. Ron will be speaking to us from Scotland. After a break in the series to facilitate attendance at the AAMC meeting, we will continue with Dr. Jeanne Schlesinger exalting us to ‘say no to boring lectures, whether live or online’. We will finish the series with Dr. Steve Ehrman, vice president of the Teaching, Learning and Technology group speaking to us on ‘evaluating the effectiveness of distance learning’ and Dr. Carol Nichols sharing the results of a survey which she did which speaks to the ‘student’s perspective on lectures’. We will be joined in this final seminar by some students from the University of Massachusetts Medical school who will add their perspective to the discussion. We invite you to join this Webcast audio ‘lecture’ series as learners and, in so doing, challenge the speakers as to how they might keep you engaged in what you are learning!
