Jeanne Schlesinger is an
Assistant Professor and the Director of
Instructional Development at the VCU
School of Medicine's Office of Faculty
and Instructional Development. She
received an M.Ed. from VCU in Adult
Education and Human Resource Development
in 1995. Jeanne collaborates with SOM
faculty to develop computer- and
web-based programs for students,
housestaff, and practitioners.
She is particularly interested in
exploring ways to make presentations
more engaging and learner-centered,
whether in person, print, or online. She
has co-presented numerous workshops for
IAMSE on effective web-based teaching,
as well as national workshops on public
speaking and visual media. At VCU School
of Medicine she regularly coaches
faculty and students on these topics in
workshops and through individual
consultation.
Jeanne is involved in the beginning of a
a two-year longitudinal focus-group
study of first and second year medical
students to evaluate the effectiveness
of VCU's E-curriculum resources. She is
in her second year of participation with
a new VCU initiative called Project
HEART, where faculty members work
longitudinally with a small group of
students to foster their humanism and
call to service. In addition, she is
one of three faculty advisors to HOMBRE,
a student-run group providing medical
missionary services to Hondurans.
Her mentoring and focus group activities
provide her an opportunity to understand
the student perspective from a broader
perspective than that available through
typical formal channels. Her humor and
anecdotal presentation style model what
she is trying to teach. She received
the ultimate complement from an audience
member in a 6:45 a.m. Anesthesiology
Grand Round presentation when one of the
audience members woke up 15 minutes into
her talk!
