Description
The
Virtual Practicum employs “advanced multimedia”
designs and production practices, integrating media to
provide an immersive learning environment and learning
experiences using multiple modalities. It incorporates
mentor/apprentice learning strategies, case-based learning
via virtual patients, lectures, computer-based activities,
interviews with patients, and role-modeling by experts,
all in a graphically integrated learning environment. In
addition to scientific and technical knowledge, it deals
with less quantifiable, often more complex kinds of
knowledge that, as Donald said, “Lie beyond the canons
of technical rationality.”
We believe that model provides a useful template clinical
education that employs technology-mediated learning. It is
based on Developed over 20 years, the model can be
generalized and used by others. This seminar will describe
and – if technically feasible – demonstrate the model.
This will include a short description of theory underlying
the model (Schön’s reflective practicum, Boisot’s
epistemological space, and Kolb’s learning cycle).
Prior to the seminar, attendees are invited to actually
use one of the virtual practicum programs. These are
accessible at no charge via broadband Internet. Please
note that these programs, though Internet-based, are not
Web-based. You will have to download and install an
executable and supporting media files. Video segments are
“streamed” in real time (hence the requirement for a
broadband connection). You may also download a a paper
describing the model and its philosophical/scientific
foundations.
