Elaine Dannefer, Ph.D.
is the Director of Medical Education
Research and Evaluation in the Office of
Curricular Affairs at the new Cleveland
Clinic Lerner College of Medicine, a program
within Case School of Medicine. Her graduate
degree is in sociology and entry into
medical education began with program
evaluation. In her current position she has
primary responsibility for developing the
portfolio assessment system that combines
formative and summative use of portfolios.
Her interest in student assessment developed
during her work at the University of
Rochester where she served as Associate Dean
for Curriculum and was involved in work on a
formative comprehensive assessment program
designed to assess professional competency.
Her work on peer assessment and the use of
standardized patients for formative purposes
inform her commitment to developing
assessment methods to promote learning.
Dr. Dannefer’s research interests focus
on the development of assessment methods
that require integration of a range of
competencies and that promote reflective
practice.
