Sheila Chauvin, Ph.D.

Dr. Sheila Chauvin is Director of
the Office of Medical Education Research and
Development, School of Medicine, Director of
the Academy for the Advancement of
Educational Scholarship, and Professor,
Departments of Internal Medicine and School
of Public Health at Louisiana State
University Health Sciences Center in New
Orleans. Dr. Chauvin’s
academic background includes a Ph. D. with
Honors in Educational Administration and
Supervision (minor: Psychology); a Bachelor
of Arts in Special Education and Elementary
Education, and a Master of Education with
Honors in Curriculum and Instruction, and
Learning Disabilities (minor: Psychology). In
addition to Dr. Chauvin’s range of
responsibilities at LSU, she consults with
interested students, residents, fellows, and
faculty members, individually and in small
groups, to enhance professional development,
learning, and academic success. Prior to
joining LSU, Dr. Chauvin held a similar
position at Tulane University School of
Medicine, where she created and implemented
several successful academic support and
counseling programs in collaboration with
faculty, residents, and students. She has
also collaborated with colleagues at other
medical schools and conducted invited and
peer-reviewed presentations at regional,
national, and international professional
meetings. Dr. Chauvin’s previous career
experiences, dating back to 1975, have
included responsibilities and contributions
such as teaching and assessing individuals
with various disabilities, conducted
educational diagnostic and eligibility
evaluations, directing a centralized student
appraisal services center, and creating and
training a variety of diagnostic
professionals to use innovative educational
assessment and intervention methods for
students needing academic assistance and
special education programs.
