Qualitative Research Methods in Medical Education

Presented by Ilene Harris, Ph.D.
University of Illinois-Chicago College of Medicine

 Description

Qualitative data from focus group discussions, interviews, observation field notes, and responses to open-ended survey questions is increasingly used by medical science educators – in admissions processes, needs assessments, program development, curriculum evaluation, student performance assessment and various research applications.  The purpose of this Seminar is to help medical science educators develop perspectives and some practical strategies for the appropriate and effective use of qualitative data  in educational planning, evaluation, and research.

In this one-hour IAMSE Audio Seminar, Dr. Harris will compare qualitative research methods with quantitative methods, using specific examples;  discuss the appropriate role of qualitative methods in educational planning, evaluation and research in medical education;  demonstrate specific strategies for the essential task in qualitative data analysis – identifying themes and categories in qualitative data sets, with attention to validity, reliability, and trustworthiness;   discuss issues and potential problems in analysis of qualitative data;  and identify resources for basic science educators to refine their skills in the use of qualitative and quantitative methods for educational planning, evaluation and research.
