Documenting,
Evaluating, and Rewarding Educational
Scholarship
Presented by Ruth-Marie
E. Fincher, MD
Medical College of Georgia School of Medicine |
|
Description
| Teaching is a core mission of
all medical schools, but often is undervalued in
reward systems, compared to research and
clinical care, both of which generate revenue.
Valuing teaching and scholarship related to
teaching is important for medical schools to
improve the quality of teaching and to advance
the field of medical education.
In this webcast audio
seminar, Dr. Fincher will define the continuum
of teaching, scholarly teaching, and scholarship
of teaching based on review of the non-medical
and medical literature. She will describe
scholarship as advancing or transforming
knowledge in a field through creative
application of one’s intellect in an informed,
disciplined and creative manner. Scholarly
products are judged by peer review for quality
and public dissemination for others to learn
from and build upon. Products of the scholarship
of teaching should be peer reviewed through a
mechanism that parallels the peer review of
manuscripts and grants. Dr. Fincher will present
examples of products of the scholarship of
teaching, and discuss venues and methods for
peer review and public dissemination. She will
describe the AAMC’s Group on Educational
Affairs’ Competencies Across the Continuum of
Healthcare Education (CACHE) project as an
example of a web-based vehicle for peer review.
She will discuss educator’s portfolios as a
mechanism for documenting teaching and scholarly
contributions and then can be used for
professional development or presentation of
accomplishments to a promotion and tenure
committee.
