| Boyd F. Richards, Ph.D.
is Professor of Pediatrics and Director of
the Office of Curriculum at Baylor College
of Medicine in Houston, Texas.
Formerly, he was Associate Professor of
Medical Education at the Bowman Gray School
of Medicine of Wake Forest University.
Since earning a Ph.D. in Instructional
Systems Technology from Indiana University
in 1985, Dr. Richards, as a generalist, has
focused his academic work on many different
aspects of medical education. These
activities include developing and evaluating
clinical performance examinations,
problem-based learning curricula, active
learning strategies, and faculty
development. He has served as Editor
of Performance Improvement Quarterly. He
currently serves on the editorial board of
Teaching and Learning in Medicine and as a
reviewer for Academic Medicine. He is chair
elect of the Society of Directors of
Research in Medical Education (SDRME).
During the past 8 years,
Dr. Richards has led nationally recognized
efforts to implement a comprehensive program
of educator development and recognition at
Baylor (see http://www.bcm.edu/fac-ed/). A
major focus of these efforts has been to
build a pro-teaching environment within the
school that fosters and rewards educational
scholarship. A showcase of these efforts is
a standards-based recognition program,
modeled after the NIH grant review process,
which “positively informs the promotions
process” for educators. Recipients of the
award become 5-year members of the
school’s recently formed Academy of
Distinguished Educators.
