Brian Mavis, Ph.D. is an associate
professor in the Office of Medical Education
Research and Development (OMERAD) in the
College of Human Medicine at Michigan State
University. His graduate training was
in psychology, where he specialized in the
evaluation of human services programs.
He is involved in a variety of student
assessment and program evaluation
activities, many of which focus on clinical
skills acquisition and competency assessment
in the preclinical curriculum. His
research interests focus on
performance-based assessment as well as
issues related to student selection and
admissions. In 2000, he was awarded the
College of Human Medicine Outstanding
Teacher-Scholar Award.
In 1996, Dr. Mavis launched DR-ED, a
listserv for medical educators.
Currently there are over 1,100 members from
30 countries participating in this virtual
community of educators interested in issues
related to medical and professional
education. Dr. Mavis is currently a
member of the Research in Medical Education
(RIME) program planning committee for
Association of American Medical Colleges.
He also a representative on the advisory
committee for medical school programs of the
National Board of Medical Examiners.
He has been an evaluation consultant for a
variety of organizations including the
American Board of Emergency Medicine,
Association of Program Directors in Colon
and Rectal Surgery, MSU College of Nursing,
MSU College of Veterinary Medicine, Henry
Ford Health System, and the March of Dimes
Birth Defects Foundation.
