| Ilene B. Harris, PhD
is Professor and Director of Graduate
Studies in the Department of Medical
Education, and Professor in the Department
of Pathology, at the University of Illinois
(UIC) College of Medicine-Chicago.
Prior to coming to UIC in 2003, she was at
the University of Minnesota-Twin Cities
College of Medicine for almost 30 years,
most recently as Professor and Director of
the Office of Educational Development and
Research.
Dr. Harris has had a
number of regional and national leadership
roles, including chair of the Association of
American Medical Colleges (AAMC) annual
meeting Research in Medical Education (RIME)
Conference Steering Committee, founding
convenor of the AAMC Central Region RIME,
Chair of the AAMC Central Region Group on
Education Affairs (CGEA), and President of
the American Educational Research
Association (AERA), Division of Education in
the Professions (Division I).
Dr. Harris' research interests include
clinical performance assessment, teaching in
ambulatory settings, curriculum reform, and
qualitative research methods. This research
has been reported in over 85 papers in
leading peer-reviewed journals in medical
education, several book chapters, and over
250 peer-reviewed or invited presentations
at regional or national meetings.
Dr. Harris is
internationally known for her expertise in
qualitative research methods. She is
author of the chapter, Qualitative
Methods in the International
Handbook of Research on Medical Education,
edited by Geoff Norman and Cees Van der
Vluten. She has given workshops on
qualitative research methods at AAMC
national and regional meetings, national
IAMSE meetings, and fellowship institutes of
the Foundation for the Advancement of
International Medical Education and
Research, a subsidiary of the Education
Council for Foreign Medical Graduates.
