Byron E. Crawford, II, M.D. is a
graduate of Louisiana State University School
of Medicine in New Orleans. He
completed his residency in both anatomical
and clinical pathology at the same
institution, and is board certified by the
American Board of Pathology in each of these
specialties. After finishing his
residency training, Dr. Crawford spent
sixteen years in private practice including
the establishment of several laboratories.
In 1998, Dr. Crawford returned to an academic
environment by joining the Tulane University
School of Medicine faculty.
Currently, Dr. Crawford is an associate
professor of pathology at Tulane University
School of Medicine in New Orleans and
practices surgical and autopsy pathology.
He is the director of the T-2 Mechanisms of
Diseases – Pathology and Pathophysiology
Course and is the Co-Director of the Tulane
Pathology Residency Program. He chairs
the T-2 Curriculum Advisory Committee, and is
a member of the Curriculum Committee, Student
Affairs Committee, Medical Education
Management Team and the Pathology Education
Committee. As an Adjunct Associate
Professor in the Department of Urology at
Tulane, Dr. Crawford participates in the
education of urology residents related to
urologic pathology.
Dr. Crawford also is an active participant,
nationally and internationally, in medical
educational organizations. He is a
member of the Group for Research in Pathology
Education (G.R.I.P.E.) and is the chairmen of
the G.R.I.P.E. Clinical Case Item Bank
Committee and member of the G.R.I.P.E.
Objectives Committee. As a member of
the International Association of Medical
Science Educators (IAMSE), Dr. Crawford
participates as a member on two committees,
Development Committee and the Program
Committee (Summer 2004 IAMSE – Tulane
Meeting). He is currently a nominee for
the Board of Directors of IAMSE. Dr.
Crawford is also a clinical laboratory
inspector for the College of American
Pathologists (CAP). As a team leader,
he has inspected numerous hospital
laboratories for the CAP Commission on
Laboratory Accreditation, who has
responsibilities for accrediting and
licensing hospital laboratories
