Peter Anderson, D.V.M., Ph.D. is a
Professor in the Department of Pathology and
Director of Pathology Undergraduate
Education at the University of Alabama at
Birmingham School of Medicine. He
received his Doctor of Veterinary Medicine
degree from the Washington State University
School of Veterinary Medicine and after a
Veterinary and Comparative Pathology
residency program obtained his Ph.D.
specializing in cardiovascular pathology.
Dr. Anderson has been on the faculty at UAB
since 1986 and currently directs an NIH-funded
research program investigating cardiac
hypertrophy and congestive heart failure.
In addition to receiving local teaching
awards, Dr. Anderson has been recognized for
his excellence in pathology education
through a series of regional and national
awards in pathology informatics and software
development. Due to the unique demands
of the "image-rich" nature of
pathology, he has experimented with various
multimedia approaches for teaching pathology
to medical students. He and his
colleagues have developed a Pathology
Education Instructional Resource Website
with image databases and medical education
digital libraries. Participants are
invited to visit this site at http://peir.net
which contains over 40,000 images.
Managing a large online digital library has
required considerable investigation into
copyright and fair use issues as they relate
to academics in the digital age.
A longtime member of the former Basic
Science Education Forum and Charter Member
of IAMSE, Dr. Anderson has been active in
our organization as an elected member of the
Board of Directors and has directed various
workshops and faculty development courses at
the IAMSE annual association meetings.
