William Mallon, Ed.D. focuses his research on faculty work
life, organizational studies, and leadership in higher education.
He is Director of Organization and Management Studies at the
Association of American Medical Colleges (AAMC) where he is
currently leading research projects on biomedical research
reorganization, regional clinical campuses, and faculty personnel
policies. He also is co-author, with Dr. Julien Biebuyck, of
The Successful Medical School Department Chair series.
He received his doctoral degree in higher education policy from
Harvard University, where he was awarded the Dissertation of the
Year Citation of Excellence from the Association for the Study of
Higher Education (ASHE). Prior to joining the AAMC, he was a
research associate at the Harvard Project on Faculty Appointments.
Two recent publications focus on change in faculty appointment
policies: Tenure on Trial: Case Studies of Change in Faculty
Employment Policies (Routledge, 2001) and “Why is Tenure One
College’s Problem and Another’s Solution?” in The Questions of
Tenure (Harvard University Press, 2002). In addition, he has
published on topics such as organizational change and faculty
productivity. He has been a consultant at numerous colleges,
universities, and medical schools, as well as for the Ministry of
Education in the United Arab Emirates.
