Gerald S. Kirby, Ph.D. is Director of Gross Anatomy at
Tulane University School of Medicine where he is an associate
professor in the Department of Cellular and Structural Biology.
Since 1990 Dr. Kirby has been transforming the gross anatomy course
from one of structure memorization to a functional/clinical course
centered on problem solving. Throughout the course students
are challenged with unfamiliar clinical cases of altered anatomical
origin and asked to diagnose the problem based upon their knowledge
of normal anatomy and function. Several types of problem-based
learning are utilized in the course. Dr. Kirby is the
recipient of over twenty student based teaching awards.
