PEDAGOGICAL TECHNOLOGY OF RATING ASSESSMENT OF STUDENTS’ EDUCATIONAL ACHIEVEMENT

A.N. Kalinichenko*, Izhevsk State Medical Academy, Izhevsk, 426034, RUSSIA

Pedagogical technology is aimed at objective control of the quality of students’ knowledge and intensification of their motivation to achieve high results in study based on the universal method.

It is based as a system of algorithms aimed at rating assessment of both individual and group educational achievement of students. Educational achievement is assessed by any criteria of teaching process included in rating module where 100 rating units of achievement (RU) are distributed according to selected criteria, (e.g. academic achievement – 70 RU, researching – 20 RU, discipline – 10 RU). Depending on the number of RU obtained by a particular student, he/she gets either encouraging (from 0.1 to 0.5) or penal (from –0.1 to – 0.5) points. At the end of the course the student gets an average mark calculated of all marks received at the lessons. Encouraging / penal points are added / subtracted from the average mark determining educational achievement ranging from 5.5 to 2.5.

The technology is used in teaching process, its effectiveness has been proved experimentally. Advantages of this technology include: objective control of the quality of students’ knowledge; determining the rate of students’ involvement in the process of learning; unifying methods of assessing students’ educational achievement; wide assessing range with the maintenance of the existing 4-mark (2,3,4,5) system of assessing academic achievement; detailed analysis of students’ educational achievement according to a number of teaching process criteria that enables correcting students’ learning activity; competition in studying; increasing attendance of lessons and reducing the number of latecomers; stimulating students for research work; allowing the students not to take the credit (e.g. in case his/her educational achievement equals 4.5) and not to take the exam (e.g. in case his/her educational achievement equals 5.5); providing objective data of students’ educational achievement for granting scholarships and determining their amounts as well as for encouraging students financially and morally, for distributing vacancies among the graduates, for admitting graduates to internship, residency, post-graduate course.

The technology allows to find out the level of students’ educational achievement and to make its detailed analysis. It also plays an important part in the qualimetric monitoring in the system of education.
