AN INNOVATIVE, INTERACTIVE, AND CLINICALLY ORIENTED MULTIMEDIA HISTOLOGY SESSION USING VIDEOCLIPS FROM MOVIES AND POLLING FACILITIES

Cristian Stefan, M.D.* and Ancuta M. Stefan, M.D., Department of Cell Biology, University of Massachusetts Medical School, Worcester, MA 01655, USA

Recent data shows that only 61% of US medical students consider that the instruction received in Microanatomy/Histology prepared them for clinical clerkships and electives.  To help students better realize the functional and clinical relevance of the material studied in Histology, we designed and conducted a highly innovative and interactive session based on videoclips from non-medical movies.  Physiological/pathophysiological concepts presented in the Respiratory and Hematology sections of our Histology course were applied in relation to the carefully selected videoclips.  The presentation correlated histological structures (light and electronic microscopy) with functions, medical history, principles of physical examination, and clinical imaging.  Emphasis was placed on problem solving skills.  Multiple choice questions were asked at appropriate times and answered using laptops provided by the Office of Medical Education and Prometheus polling access.  Confidentiality of individual answers was maintained.  Further discussions were prioritized according to the specific response received from the class and reinforced basic and clinical science concepts in an integrative manner.  66% of students who answered a questionnaire found this exercise very useful or useful and another 28% somehow useful.
