Workshop
“Reviewing Medical Education Resources”
Saturday July 10, 2004
3:30 - 5:30 pm

Increasingly, health sciences educators
develop and use digital materials to create more effective and engaging
learning environments for students. Many faculty spend countless
hours to create such materials, but few receive academic recognition
for their efforts.
There is an emerging trend to recognize “digital scholarship”.
Several organizations, including the Health Education Assets Library
(HEAL), have come together to create a reliable and valid process for
peer reviewing digital education materials.
Workshop Objectives
In this 90-minute workshop participants will use an interactive computer
program to learn to evaluate digital medical education resources (e.g.,
digital images, tutorials, cases).
After this workshop participant will be able to demonstrate the following knowledge and skills:
- Use guidelines for describing and evaluating teaching
materials along several dimensions, with descriptive characteristics
including learning goals, target student population and recommended
use, and with evaluation criteria including quality, effectiveness, and
ease of use.
- Evaluate materials of different levels of complexity ranging from image collections to “virtual patients”
- Understand terminology and criteria to participate in national peer review efforts
Workshop Prerequisites
This workshop does not require specialized technical skills.
Participants must have a strong interest in participating as a reviewer
for HEAL or similar national peer review initiative.
