Becoming an Effective Course Director

Description

The purpose of this course is to initiate a discussion of the important questions – how does one become and remain an effective course director? 

Participants will learn:

 
bullet the responsibilities of a course director to his/her students, the teaching faculty, departmental administration, and to the educational deans of the College
bullet the importance of resource selection in the planning and implementation of a course
bullet what effectiveness is and how it is measured
bullet the pitfalls that must be avoided in becoming and remaining an effective course director

Instructors

Jay H. Menna, Ph.D.
Professor of Microbiology and
Associate Dean for Medical Education

Dr. Menna has been a faculty member of the College of Medicine, University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences for 25 years, and a course director for five years.  Recipient of nine Golden Apple awards, he has also been presented with the Red Sash Award - seventeen times - as one of the most effective teachers in the College by vote of the graduating senior class.  As Associate Dean, Dr. Menna works instructively with all basic science course directors. 
 
 

Patrick W. Tank, Ph.D.
Professor of Anatomy and Neurobiology

For 17 years Dr. Tank has been course director for Human Gross Anatomy in the College of Medicine at the University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences.  He is the Lutterloh Professor of Medical Education Excellence.  Dr. Tank has received the Red Sash teaching award - thirteen times, the Golden Apple award five times, and been nominated an additional nine times.
