Fourth Biennial Conference
of the
International Association of Medical Science Educators

Letter Of Invitation

Dear Colleagues,

It it our pleasure to present the registration materials and a call for abstracts for the upcoming Fourth Biennial Conference of the International Association of Medical Science Educators (IAMSE).  Many of you will remember the previous three successful conferences held under our former name of the Basic Science Education Forum.  Now as IAMSE, we continue to devote these events to exploring educational strategies in the basic medical sciences; i.e., those derived from the traditional disciplines of Anatomy, Behavioral Sciences, Biochemistry, Microbiology, Pathology, Pharmacology, and Physiology. Our goal, through the sharing of information and techniques in medical education, is to help all medical science faculty maximize their effectiveness in producing knowledgeable, skillful and compassionate health care providers.

This year, our theme is Advances in Medical Science Education:  Learning Modes and Teaching Strategies.  The program, which is being developed cooperatively by an international group of medical faculty, will delve first into the latest findings in the field of educational research on human learning patterns.  This information will then be used to suggest practical teaching strategies which each of us as faculty members can utilize in our classrooms.  Attendees will have the opportunity to actively participate in this educational forum through numerous breakout sessions, poster presentations, group discussions and hands-on workshops.  For those who have not yet joined IAMSE, we are pleased to announce a special membership offer:  a significant part of the non-member registration fee for this conference will be credited towards a two-year discounted IAMSE membership.

We are delighted that the conference venue this year is at Georgetown University School of Medicine in Washington, DC.  This institution has a rich tradition of commitment to excellence in medical education and embodies the internationalism and cultural diversity that are the fundamental basis of IAMSE.  Located in the capital city of the United States of America, Georgetown University's Conference Center is easily accessible from any point on the globe.  The beautiful, serene setting on campus, overlooking the Potomac River, provides an ideal site for an intellectually stimulating forum.

The Georgetown University Medical Center Office of Continuing Professional Education designates this continuing medical education activity for 16 credit hours in Category 1 of the Physician's Recognition Award of the American Medical Association.

As a medical science faculty member, attending physician, curriculum administrator, medical or graduate student looking towards a career in academic medicine, we encourage you to join with your colleagues from around the world as together we develop strategies to achieve the Flexnerian ideal:  presentation of a rigorous scientific foundation to practical clinical problems using the very latest educational methodologies.  We cordially invite you to submit an abstract of your projects in medical science education relating to our theme, for presentation in either poster discussions or computer demonstration sessions.  Please note that the deadline for receipt of abstracts is May 1, 1999.

We look forward to seeing you in Washington, DC this summer.

Roger Koment, Ph.D.                  Henry Mandin, M.D.                Aviad Haramati, Ph.D.
IAMSE President                        Program Committee Chair        Host and Site Director
