GRIPE - Designing Educational Research with the IRB in Mind

During this workshop, participants will explore the regulatory and ethical principles that apply to medical education research where students are considered to be human subjects of the research. The role of the Institutional Review Board in regulating human subjects research will be discussed and how their role applies to educational research. Privacy concerns and FERPA will also be discussed. Using active learning methods, participants will explores ways to design medical education studies in order to best anticipate and fulfill the requirements of Institutional Review Board oversight while at the same time, promoting good quality research design. The goal of the session is to provide medical educators with tools to facilitate the development of research projects in their teaching programs. Dr. Kreisle has served on the Purdue University Institutional Review Board for 16 years and currently serves as the Co-Chair of the Biomedical IRB.
