TBL - Hands-on TBL: Hands-Down the Best Approach

Charles Seidel, Janice Johnson, Michael Robinson, and Nancy Bauer, Ross University

An essential aspect of Team Based Learning is the group application activity, an opportunity for learners to utilize their knowledge to solve real-life problems.  Even though these application activities are to reflect real-life problems, they tend to be paper-based rather than hands-on.  The facilitators of this focus group are using TBL as an educational approach to train preclinical medical students and have experimented with different hands-on approaches to make group application activities more true-to-life.  The group will share their experience incorporating standardized patients, whole-body simulators, and WebSP into group application activities.  These technologies, their incorporation into application activities, student and faculty feedback on their use, as well as benefits and short-comings will be briefly discussed.  The remainder of the session will be for participants to share their experiences developing group application activities that reflect real-life.   The goal is for all to leave the session with new ideas on how to construct group application activities that are even more beneficial to the learners.
