T6 TBL:  Facilitation Skills

Michael Sweet, University of Texas - Austin

Participants will work in teams to identify key facilitation skills after watching video clips of ‘real’ TBL sessions.  The faculty will demonstrate additional ‘in class’ ways to enhance debate and encourage students to pay more attention to building their own interpersonal skills as they learn from each other.

By the conclusion of this workshop, the participant will be able to:

1) Identify the key features of a dynamic TBL module.
2) Explain how the instructor can focus on the ‘power of why’ to generate high-energy debate in the classroom.
3) Avoid facilitation ‘pitfalls’ such as arguing over IRAT answers, lecturing, misaps in the logistics of time, paperwork, props.
