Enliven Student Sessions with a Tablet PC: A Versatile, Interactive Teaching Tool

Suzanne Stensaas, University of Utah

There are many uses for a tablet PC using features such as speech and handwriting recognition, but this session will focus on the types of medical educational sessions annotation can enhance.  A “convertible” Tablet can serve as both a tablet and keyboard laptop, so really adds no expense if you are buying a laptop and yet permits many more opportunities for interaction.  This workshop is a brief exposure to the options, some hands-on exercises with the Tablet PC, followed by group discussion and examples of combining the tablet with audience response system “clicker” quizzes and on-the-fly mark-up of pages on the web (iMarkup).

Pen-based input is an effective way to supplement standard teaching practices.  The most widely used Microsoft applications, such as Word, Excel, and PowerPoint, are integrated with the pen-based screen input. However, one of the more powerful applications is Windows Journal, a digital writing pad that comes with every tablet. Journal documents can be annotated with text and drawings directly on the screen.  Documents can be saved as PDF files and posted to the web. Journal has built-in drawing tools that significantly enhance the ability to color anatomical diagrams and emphasize key learning concepts. An additional feature is the ability to zoom in on photographic detail without loss of resolution and to flag important information.

You can then decide if a tablet will enhance your interactivity.  This is NOT a workshop for those already familiar with or using Tablet PCs.  The focus will be strictly on educational uses and not involve comparison of various models. This is for teachers, not techies.
