INTRODUCTION The digital age of teaching the anatomical sciences affords an unprecedented opportunity to provide students with curriculum materials that are interactive and enjoyable to study. Using the Adobe Flash platform, curriculum materials can be custom formatted to include a variety of media presentations such as video, radiological images, interactive labels and animation. As a result, traditionally difficult concepts to teach in the anatomical sciences can be illustrated digitally without the use of proprietary programs that limit an instructor’s creativity or perspective. These materials can be distributed as stand-alone files through the Web or as downloadable files from a local server. OBJECTIVES Participants will be introduced to the Adobe Flash platform and its potential for creating interactive, animated presentations. Examples used in the teaching of gross anatomy, radiology and histopathology in the first two years of the medical curriculum at the David Geffen School of Medicine at UCLA will be presented. OUTCOMES In this hands-on workshop, participants will learn how to convert a typical Microsoft PowerPoint presentation into a Flash presentation that contains embedded video, interactive labels and basic animations.
INTENDED AUDIENCE The Flash presentation format has been applied to the creation of interactive digital lectures, texts, laboratory guides and self-study modules. Educators in institutions moving toward (or already have made the transition into) a digital curriculum who seek a method to create interactive digital materials for students would benefit from this workshop. PRE-REQUISITES No special skills needed.
