Medical Informatics: Building the Skills of a Lifelong Learner

Richard Vari and Barbara Knight, University of North Dakota School of Medicine & Health Sciences

The University of North Dakota School of Medicine and Health Sciences in Grand Forks ND has incorporated an instructional continuum on lifelong learning into the medical school curriculum. Our objectives for the role of the lifelong learner are to access, evaluate, and use information resources for lifelong learning and to maintain and enhance computing skills. The continuum begins during the first week of orientation to medical school and continues through all four years. During the second year of medical school we dedicate a block of time to review of information resources and tools, efficient retrieval of information and critical evaluation of information retrieved. During this workshop we will share materials and examples provided for students. This includes but is not limited to: PICO worksheets, effective search strategies designed to maximize time constraints of clinicians and available evidence based resources available online and on PDAs. We will also share information on related activities during the third and fourth years.
