“Web 2.0” technologies are rapidly changing the way in which users interact on the Internet. The move towards “social media” or user generated content has led to a proliferation of online blogs, wikis, photo sharing sites like Flickr, video sharing sites like YouTube, and social networking sites like MySpace. Users are able to collaborate and express ideas in ways never possible before. In addition, the open application programming interfaces (APIs) offered by many of these services allow them to be combined easily into new services, or “mash-ups.” This is not designed for power users, but for educators looking forward or feeling the generation gap. This workshop will introduce participants to each of these technologies; participants will gain hands-on experience with blogs, wikis, and photo and video sharing. The group will discuss ways in which this technology currently is being used by students, and how it could be incorporated into teaching and learning.
