F9 Strategies on Integrating Complementary and Alternative Medicine (CAM) into Health Professions Education

Luke H. Mortensen, Des Moines University
Aviad Haramati and Michael Lumpkin, Georgetown University
Frank Vincenzi, University of Washington

Establishing a program in Complementary and Alternative Medicine (CAM) within a health professions curriculum can be challenging if faculty are unfamiliar with some of the difficulties and strategies that other institutions have recognized in their experiences with such an endeavor. CAM programs exist in many formats ranging in emphasis from simple elective courses to comprehensive graduate research initiatives. The objectives and focus of these programs also vary from simple didactic exposure to full integration of the critical scientific evaluation of CAM modalities and research with conventional medical education. This interactive focus session will expose the participant to various approaches in the integration of CAM into a health professions curriculum.
