Many professional schools have worked to lower the divide between preclinical and clinical curricula by initiating earlier clinical exposure for students. Fewer have worked to bring sciences basic to medicine into the later phases of training. The proposed USMLE Gateway Exam may make such strategies necessary, since students will potentially be examined on basic science topics later in their training. But this approach also offers opportunities for encouraging students to think scientifically throughout school, and into later practice. This sessions will review current strategies for teaching basic science in years 3-4 of current curricula and solicit proposals from attendee working groups as to how such curricula could be designed and initiated.
