In this focus group, we will discuss strategies for implementation of a basic science into an integrated medical school curriculum with help of e-learning. By sharing experiences of how to handle this process, we try to reach general recommendations for a successful integration. As an example of integrating a basic science we will briefly show our own experiences with pharmacology/pharmacotherapy teaching at Leiden University Medical School, the Netherlands. We will review the developmental process and implementation and consider the following important aspects for successful integration: determining appropriate outcomes, choosing a learning strategy, educational support, cooperation, technical support, integration in the e-learning environment, incorporating materials in established courses, quality control, determining the students learning progress, and monitoring how well you are doing. Who should attend? This focus session can be useful for faculty, managers and e-learning developers who either want to implement a new e-learning method into the curriculum, or those who wish to meet unfulfilled educational needs using self-study learning strategies. It does not matter whether you are already in the middle of such a process (and have problems or ideas to contribute) or you have plans/needs to start up a project like this. Participants will benefit from our experience of implementing pharmacology teaching. Furthermore, the attendees will have the opportunity to share their own problems and solutions as we discuss the different aspects. The focus session should provide the participants with several examples of real solutions to the problems often faced during the implementation of new educational methods in a curriculum.
