F8 -Building Medical Education Communities: Skills for Assessing and Facilitating Communication Among Basic Science Faculty, Medical Educators and Clinical Faculty

Drs. Janice Grackin & Elyza Mylona, Stony Brook University Medical Center

The quality of medical education programs is affected by the qualities and effectiveness of communications among those charged with responsibility for the education process—basic science faculty, medical educators and clinical faculty—and dependent on progress toward building local and extended medical education communities.  The primary objective of this workshop session is to provide participants with basic knowledge and a set of communication skills with which to assess and actively facilitate the ongoing development of medical education communities within their own institutions. Additionally, through this workshop attendees will be empowered by new knowledge and skills to participate constructively in the extended national and international conversations across medical education programs.

Overview of program:

In this 90-minute session, Drs. Grackin and Mylona will first provide a brief overview of psychological, cognitive and social factors related to communication, group processes and organizational problem solving. Participants will then be asked to apply this knowledge through a case-based small group exercise focused on assessing and facilitating individual and group communications within the context of problem solving processes specific to medical education.
