F15 -Confidence Based Marking: A Tool to Improve Students' Self Assessment

Dr. Stephen Wood Ross University School of Medicine

Confidence based marking on exams asks students to not only determine which answer is correct, but to indicate their degree of confidence in their answer, with points awarded and subtracted based on the degree of confidence.

This workshop will introduce the concept of confidence based marking (CBM), demonstrate the process with a short quiz taken by participants, and discuss issues related to pros and cons of CBM including possible gender bias.  The hypothesis underlying CBM is that student performance on objective tests will improve.  Results of CBM in physiology Ross University School of Medicine in Dominica will be discussed.
