F12 -Training our Learners for PBL
Problem based learning (PBL) has been thoroughly described as a teaching and learning methodology and each school employing this methodology has developed its own faculty development program wherein they develop their teachers for this form of teaching. But, what about the learners? How do we prepare them for this ‘learner centered’ activity? The presenter of this session has performed a survey of over 400 medical students as to their beliefs about PBL: (i) upon entering into medical school; (ii) at the end of a one and half hour orientation to PBL; (iii) at the end of their first five weeks of PBL; (iv) at the end of three months of PBL; and, (v) at the end of nine months of PBL. The results of this survey will be used as a jumping off point to engage the audience in a discussion around the following questions: (i) how do we prepare our learners for PBL? (ii) is this preparation adequate? and, (iii) what would a good ‘preparing our learners for PBL’ program look like?
