SURVEY OF EDUCATION ENVIRONMENT OF AFFILIATED HOSPITALS USING MODIFIED DUNDEE READY EDUCATION ENVIRONMENT MEASURE

Purpose
The medical students in Buddhachinaraj Hospital, School of Medicine undertake their clinical placement on community medicine at community hospitals in Phitsanulok, Thailand. The participating hospital has freedom over selection of educators, teaching styles, teaching sites and amount of teaching offer. This study aims to analyze the education environment in the affiliated hospitals using modified Dundee Ready Education Environment Measure (DREEM).
Methods
The modification of DREEM form was translation into Thai, five domains of perception still existed and nine items were considered not relevant in Thailand. 52 students undertook their clinical placement at one of six hospitals in 2005, another 63 students undertook in 2006. After the placement, the students were asked to fill this 41 items questionnaire. The Likert scale of 1-5 was used, negative statements being converted into positive scales.
Results
100 responses from 115 students(86.96%). The overall score for all hospitals range from 127.15 - 155.54 from maximum score 205. There was no different between year 2005 and 2006 students’ score. The hospitals with overall high score possess high score in every domain. The internal consistency was high with Cronbach’s alpha 0.96.
Conclusion
By using modified DREEM in Thai version, the education environment in the affiliated hospital can be measure. Grading of the hospitals by this modified DREEM’s score may be used accompany with another criteria.
