Purpose

The objective of every single course in the medical curriculum must be directed to the development of clinical competencies, what is of particular interest in the basic sciences in order to narrow the gap between basic courses and its clinical application.  To achieve this goal we develop a methodological strategy called CASE STUDY BASED ON EFFICIENT QUESTIONS AND IMAGES INTERPRETATION.

Methods

A course was offered to the Faculty in order to introduce this methodology in their academic activities and according to their structure cases were classified in:

bulletClinical Summary
bulletFollow-up case
bulletProblem-case

In a discussion session, the case is presented to the students and the professor lead the discussion through efficient questions and images interpretation.

Results

By the use of this methodology we have managed:

bulletPlace the students in a real scene of the clinical practice
bulletNarrow the gap between basic and clinical sciences
bulletIntegrate the learning in a clinical context
bulletAvoid memorization of isolated knowledge
bulletVerify that active learning is better than lectures for the acquisition of clinical competencies

Conclusion

Both professors and students have become convinced of the benefits of this methodology to achieve the acquisition of clinical competencies.
