F7 - Is Your Approach to Peer Review of Teaching Equitable and Valid?

Dr. Carol-Ann Courneya,

Establishing the influence of the educational biases people bring to the peer review of teaching has not been examined in the context of medical education. In this participatory workshop we will address that gap by having participants engage in a mock review of teaching (using a taped teaching episode). Following the mock review, participants will be introduced to five perspectives on teaching that are likely to influence the review process. Through small group discussion participants will reflect on: a) how their knowledge of perspectives on teaching influenced the peer observation they just carried out; and b) how this experience may increase the validity and fairness of the peer review process in their home institutions.
