F4 - Facilitating Scholarship in Your Teaching and Educator Roles

Sheila W. Chauvin, M. Ed., Ph. D. Professor, Department of Medicine and School of Public Health Director, Office of Medical Education Research and Development Louisiana State University Health Sciences Center - New Orleans

Susan Pasquale, PhD, MT-BC, NMT Director of Curriculum and Faculty Development University of Massachusetts Medical School

In 1990, based on several decades of research, Ernest Boyer, then President of the Carnegie Foundation for the Advancement of Teaching, called for an expanded conceptualization of scholarship to include four domains: discovery (research), integration (synthesis), application (practice), and teaching (Boyer, 1990). Most recently, there has been a growing national consensus on the critical attributes or elements of scholarship (e.g., Boyer, 1990; Glassick, Huber, and Maeroff, 1997. This session will begin with an overview of the elements of scholarship, particularly as they apply to teaching/learning and educator activities. Information will be shared about a variety of peer-reviewed venues available to publish teaching and educational materials. Participants will use hands-on activities to learn how to assess and prepare their teaching materials for peer-reviewed publication. While not required for participation, interested individuals are encouraged to bring one of their original teaching materials with them to use during the session activities to enhance personalization.
