F3 - Virtual Microscopy

Dr. Jeffrey Cao, Loma Linda Adventist Health Sciences Center
Dr. Carolyn Cambor, University of Pennsylvania Health System

The concurrent session on VIRTUAL MICROSCOPY (VM) will be presented Drs. Jeff Cao and Carolyn Cambor, and moderated by Drs. Greg Smith and Mark Adelman. In the context of the educational arena, VM involves the scanning of glass microscope slides to capture high resolution digital images that are then montaged together to create a composite digital file that can be accessed via computer-based visualization tools. VM thus enables the teaching of microscopic features in the context of the entire slide without the use of either glass microscope slides or light microscopes. Topics to be covered include currently available tools for capturing and displaying the digital files; pros and cons to the use of VM as a substitute for, or supplement to, conventional glass slides and light microscopes; outcome assessment of the use of VM; and establishment of a method by which users of VM can communicate with one another and by which glass microscope slides that are targeted for discard might be retained for possible future use. This session will be useful and informative to beginning as well as experienced users of VM. Participants are encouraged to attend the session prepared to share their own experiences with VM as well as to ask questions about the strengths and weaknesses of VM, not only from the point of view of conveying factual information (knowledge), but also conveying skills and attitudes heretofore imparted using conventional light microscopy and loan slide collections."
