F13 - Strategies for Successfully Integrating Basic and Clinical Sciences in Medical Education

Drs. Jeanette Norden, Lilian Nanney, and Cathleen Pettepher, Vanderbilt University

While medical educators generally accept the tenet that integration in the curriculum promotes learning and the retention of material, little direction is given to course directors as to how to achieve horizontal and vertical integration within the basic sciences, or between basic and clinical sciences. The objective of the workshop would be to share with the participants the strategies used at Vanderbilt Medical School in three main core courses (Gross Anatomy, Cell and Tissue Biology, and Medical Neurosciences) to achieve integration between the sciences and between these courses and clinical medicine. By the end of the session participants will possess strategies to help them achieve a higher degree of integration across our disciples.
