Plenary Session VI: Debate Health Professions Schools Allocate Too Much of Their Resources to Research: This is Detrimental to Their Educational Mission
Academic institutions that train health professionals often have multiple missions, including education, research, and direct provision of health care. While most would argue that the primary responsibility of the faculty at such institutions is education, all agree that faculty should be also be engaged in active research and/or patient care. There is a constant tension in determining the proper balance amongst these faculty responsibilities, especially as regards teaching and research. The thesis of this year's IAMSE debate is that extramural funding does not fully pay for research; that limited intramural resources are drained into the research-side of the house, leaving the education-side relatively impoverished; and that this is detrimental to the ability of such institutions to achieve their primary mission of education. Arguing in favor of this proposition will be Dr. Michael Wilkes; arguing the counter proposition will be Dr. Federick Rickles.
